Seed Swap and the GardenChat group

I attended #GardenChat for the first time on Monday night. Unfortunately I only caught the last few minutes but it was enough for me to know that I want to attend again next week. They seem to be a lovely group of gardeners from various backgrounds that are helpful and generous with their gardening advise.

One of the participants that I met, Amy Hill @MHenryMitchell, was inspired by the chat about tomatoes and has decided to do a Seed Swap. This is something new for me but if you've been following along you know I've been trying to find gardeners that would like to exchange seeds, not because I'm lacking in seed (although there is still a lot that I want), because I went a little overboard on buying seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds and want to share them with others.

The only thing I ask, besides the seeds being viable, is that if you would like to exchange seeds that they come from pesticide free plants and are GMO free.

Here are the viable seeds I purchased this year from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds that I have for the seed swap.

Herbs:

  • Basil - Emily
  • Cilantro
  • Parsley Giant of Italy
  • Summer Savory (Oh how I love this herb which was a favorite of mine in California but they don't seem to have here in Georgia)
  • Tarragon, Russian (Became my new favorite herb here in Georgia)

Flowers:

  • Balls Improved Orange - Calendula
  • Petite Mix Marigold
  • Lavender (Mmmm, I can practically smell it!)
  • Yarrow, Cerise Queen

Tomatoes:

  • Costoluto Genovese Tomato
  • Pearly Pink which is a cherry tomato (cherry tomatoes are my favorite!)
  • Black Prince Tomato (I didn't even know there were other colors of tomato besides green and red.)
  • Black cherry tomato (oh I am looking forward to trying these dark beauties)

Peppers:

  • Poblano peppers (no more having to wait until I go to a Mexican restaurant for this delightful pepper.)
  • Melrose peppers (a reviewer stated they have a better flavor than bell peppers, can't wait to see for myself!)

Fruit:

  • Honeydew Orangeflesh melon (can't wait to try this one, it's like a cross between a honeydew and a cantalope).
  • Ground Cherry (I've never even heard of this before, it's like a cherry but grows similar to tomatoes. They are a mix of sweet and tart.
  • Attila Strawberry (hardy and plentiful)
  • Himalayan honesuckle or Chocalate Berry (I made a mistake in buying this as it is better for cooler zones than mine - up to zone 5.)

Miscellaneous:

  • Red Romaine (They always send a free packet of seeds with your order. I can't wait to try this!)
  • Flat of Italy onion (I am finding I am drawn to much from Italy)
  • Diamond Eggplant (seems similar to the regular eggplant but it had good reviews)
  • Rat's tail Radish (Seriously, who knew that radishes could grow on a vine and look like a green bean?)
  • Cantare Bean (a thin bush green bean that grows lots of delicious snap beans)
  • Zucchini Golden Squash

Seeds I'm looking for (I know this is a lot but I decided to put everything that I want over time in order of importance):

What I'm hoping for:

  1. Edible flowers in particular Nasturtium, Shungiku Edible Chrysanthemum, & Sunflower
  2. Jalapeno
  3. Cucumbers - All types but in particular English Cucumber & pickling cucumbers
  4. Borage
  5. Spaghetti squash
  6. Edamame
  7. Chives
  8. Purple top white globe turnip
  9. Lemon basil
  10. Lime basil
  11. Laurentian Rutabaga
  12. Dill Bouquet
  13. Spinach
  14. Lemon Balm

What I would like to get over time:

  1. Purple basil
  2. German Chamomile
  3. Melons (I have watermelon, older seed that is sprouting)
  4. Butternut squash
  5. Echinacea Purpurea
  6. Lemongrass
  7. Marjoram
  8. Oregano
  9. Sage
  10. Thyme
  11. Valerian
  12. Feverfew
  13. Fenugreek
  14. Mugwort

  1. Hi, Morgan!
I am glad to share my pickling cucumbers and jalapenos with you. I have some older seed of dill and spinach that I can send you as well--it's been stored in the fridge, but no guarantees about its viability. But at least it's free...? None of my plants were grown with pesticides. And let me check--I may have some extra Zataar oregano for you.

I also have a terrific recipe for ground cherry jam, if you are into jam-making.

I would love some black cherry and Costoluto Genovese tomatoes, and Melrose peppers. Email me at missinghenrymitchell[at]gmail[dot]com with your mailing address, and I'll get them in the mail to you.
